Istream.link is a browser hijacker that we found to be a generic search engine site that usually accompanies its search results with several sponsored links and advertisements. Much like other common browser hijacker search sites, istream.link looks to have a customized search engine setup associated with it that returns Internet search results but entices clicks on its high number of sponsored links and ads.
Using the istream.link site is not a harmful case and should not infect your computer with malware. However, the several links found on istream.link in the form of ads and sponsored links usually cause redirects to load up other sites that could have questionable content.
The purpose of istream.link is to gain money for its creators through the clicks made on its sponsored advertisement links. The practice of having a pay-per-click scheme on an Internet search site is rather common and the authors of istream.link capitalize on just that, to entice clicks on links that may be remotely related to your initial search terms. At times the istream.link site may be set as a default home page, in which several related components or web browser extensions have loaded causing your Internet settings to be changed. Reversing the effect usually requires removal of all components or browser extensions related to istream.link.
The web browser extensions and add-ons that cause istream.link to load or you to be automatically redirected to istream.link may come from the installation of freeware or 3rd party bundled software. Upon installing such software on your computer, the installer app may prompt by default that it will load add-on components related to istream.link and you have a choice of opting out by unchecking an install box.
It is wise to pay attention to the install of programs if you must install freeware programs or bundled software apps from the Internet. Doing so may prevent loading the istream.link browser hijacker and its accompanied browser extensions or add-on components. Moreover, using an antimalware program may assist with detection and removal of istream.link where you can revert back to your original Internet settings to load your desired default home page again.
